Background
The idea of building a large metallurgy plant in Quebec took hold at the beginning of the 60's. The government mandated the General Trust of Canada to buy up lands along the St. Lawrence River, and 7650 acres of land were bought.
In 1968, Quebec bought SIDBEC and the project for a metallurgy plant in Bécancour was abandoned. The government created the Société du parc industriel du centre du Québec for the land it had purchased. The Société was mandated to develop an industrial park on the territory of Bécancour and to set up the infrastructures needed for the establishment of heavy industries.
In October 1990, the Société, which was a public organization, became a state-owned company. It was now called the Société du parc industriel et portuaire de Bécancour.
Mission
The mission of the Société du parc industriel et portuaire de Bécancour is to foster economic development in Quebec by operating an independently financed waterfront industrial park.
The Société represents the Government of Quebec, and the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade is responsible for the application of its incorporating Act. Its goal is to promote the establishment of new industries and to supply the infrastructures needed for the establishment and operation of large companies.
